Since 2009, FLOSSK has supported contribution to the openly licensed map OpenStreetMap, currently the best map of Kosovo.
OpenStreetMap is an initiative to create and provide free geographic data, such as street maps for everyone. The OpenStreetMap Foundation is an international not-for-profit organization that supports the OpenStreetMap Project. Contributors to OpenStreetMap use aerial imagery, GPS devices, and low-tech field maps to verify that OSM is accurate and up to date.
Throughout 2019 and 2020 through a grant from the Government of the Duchy of Luxembourg, FLOSSK worked on the development of geographic information systems skills and data in Kosovo. FLOSSK also acquired 2,000 km of street view imagery and made it available under a free license, provided training on OSM and GIS, and organized mapathons and meetups.
In September 2020 FLOSSK became an OpenStreetMap Foundation local chapter covering Kosovo known as OSM Kosovo.
