OpenStreetMap Award Ceremony

Dje nĂ« Prishtina Hackerspace mbajtĂ«m ceremoninĂ« e ndarjes sĂ« çmimeve pĂ«r nxĂ«nĂ«sit me mĂ« sĂ« shumti kontribute nĂ« hartĂ«n e lirĂ« OpenStreetMap (OSM), nĂ« kuadĂ«r tĂ« projektit “PĂ«rkrahje adoleshentĂ«ve pas mĂ«simit tĂ« rregullt” (ASSET), tĂ« realizuar nga Kosovo Education Center (KEC). FLOSSK ka kontribuar nĂ« disa aktivitete nĂ« kuadĂ«r tĂ« kĂ«tij projekti.

Gjatë 16 mapathonave (maratona të editimit të hartës) që janë mbajtur në shkollat partnere të këtij programi, nxënësit janë aftësuar të hartografojnë në OSM, projekt i hapur bashkëpunues ku secili individ mund të kontribuojë duke edituar apo duke shtuar pika me interes.

Pesë nxënësit fitues kanë bërë 7706 editime së bashku ndërsa fituesit sipas numrit të editimeve janë:

1. Korab Haxhiu – Shkolla “Haxhi Zeka”, Istog – 1883 editime
2. Fatjeta Gashi – Shkolla “Haxhi Zeka”, Istog – 1872 editime
3. Suela Hasani – Shkolla “Eqrem Cabej”, Vushtrri – 1018 editime
4. Bedri Kalisi – Shkolla “Dardania”, Hani i Elezit – 909 editime
5. Fabian Zeqiraj – Shkolla “Haxhi Zeka”, Istog – 320 editime

Yesterday at Prishtina Hackerspace we held the award ceremony for students with the most contributions to the free map OpenStreetMap (OSM) within the project ”After School Support for Teens” (ASSET) by Kosovo Education Center (KEC). FLOSSK has contributed to some activities within this project.

During 16 mapathons (marathons of map-editing) with partner schools from this program, students have been skilled in mapping on OSM, which is an open collaborative project where anyone can contribute by editing or adding points of interest.

The five winning students have made 7706 edits in total, while winners based on the number of edits are:

1. Korab Haxhiu – School “Haxhi Zeka”, Istog – 1883 edits
2. Fatjeta Gashi – School “Haxhi Zeka”, Istog – 1872 edits
3. Suela Hasani – School “Eqrem Cabej”, Vushtrri – 1018 edits
4. Bedri Kalisi – School “Dardania”, Hani i Elezit – 909 edits
5. Fabian Zeqiraj – School “Haxhi Zeka”, Istog – 320 edits

The ”After School Support for Teens” Program is financed by USAID Kosovo and implemented by Kosovo Education Center (KEC) in partnership with FHI360 and Crimson Capital Corp.

 

International DebConf22 conference in Kosovo!

Kosova do të jetë nikoqire e konferencës ndërkombëtare DebConf22!

DebConf është konferenca vjetore e zhvilluesve të sistemit operativ Debian, që ka për qëllim zhvillimin, mbarëvajtjen dhe promovimin këtij sistemi.

Debian është sistem operativ i lirë, stabil dhe i sigurtë, i bazuar në Linux, me një shtrirje të gjerë në arkitektura të ndryshme kompjuterike. Debian ofron besueshmëri duke qenë i inkorporuar në botën industriale dhe atë akademike. Cloud images, Long Term Support, sistemi publik për bug tracking, numri i lartë i paketave softuerike (mbi 59.000), kualiteti i lartë i softuerit dhe përfshirja e shumë veglave dhe politikave për të siguruar një kualitet të tillë, janë disa nga karakteristikat që e bëjnë Debian një sistem të qëndrueshëm dhe shumë të përdorur.

Shumë nga sistemet e tjera operative si Ubuntu, Knoppix, PureOS, Linux Mint, SteamOS, Tails etj. rrjedhin dhe vazhdimisht bazohen në Debian, andaj ndikimi i një konference të tillë është madhor në zhvillimin e teknologjisë në përgjithësi.

Kjo konferencë është mundësi e rrjetëzimit dhe bashkëpunimit të zhvilluesve, kontribuesve dhe personave të tjerë të interesuar si dhe ofron prezantime të ndryshme teknologjike, me tema rreth zhvillimit teknik, social dhe politik në botën digjitale. DebConf është mbajtur çdo vit nga viti 2000 në shtete si Kanada, Finlanda, Brazili etj., me rreth 400 pjesëmarrës nga e gjithë bota. Konferenca Debian zakonisht mbahet në periudhën korrik-gusht të çdo viti.

DebConf22, e cila do të mbahet në Kosovë, do të mirëpret folës dhe zhvillues nga e gjithë bota të cilët kontribuojnë në mënyra të ndryshme në Debian. Prezantimet dhe punëtoritë e konferencës së Debian do të hapin dyert për mundësi të zhvillimit teknologjik në Kosovë dhe bashkëpunimeve lokale dhe ndërkombëtare, dhe do ta promovojë Kosovën si destinacion i teknologjisë. Që kjo të funksionojë sa më mirë, FLOSSK po punon për të arritur bashkëpunim me autoritetet përkatëse.

Që nga 2009, FLOSSK organizon konferencën vjetore Software Freedom Kosova (SFK) që mbledh rreth 350+ pjesëmarrës të cilët bashkëpunojnë dhe ndajnë interesat e përbashkëta në teknologjinë e hapur. Përveç kësaj konference, FLOSSK ka organizuar konferencën State of the Map Southeast Europe që ka mbledhur të gjithë ata që merren me sistemet e informacionit gjeografik (GIS) dhe hartën e lirë OpenStreetMap.

Kosovo will host the international DebConf22 conference!

DebConf is the annual conference of Debian operating system developers, aimed at developing, running and promoting this system.

Debian is a free, stable, and secure operating system based on Linux, with a wide range of different computer architectures. Debian offers reliability by being incorporated into the industrial and academic world. Cloud images, Long Term Support, public bug tracking system, high number of software packages (over 59,000), high quality software and the inclusion of many tools and policies to ensure such quality, are some of the features that make Debian a stable and widely used system.

Many other operating systems like Ubuntu, Knoppix, PureOS, Linux Mint, SteamOS, Tails etc. are constantly developed based on Debian, therefore the impact of such a conference is major in technology development in general.

This conference is an opportunity for networking and collaboration of developers, contributors, and other interested individuals and offers various technological presentations, with topics about technical, social and political development in the digital world. DebConf has been held annually since 2000 in countries like Canada, Finland, Brazil, etc., with around 400 participants from all over the world. The Debian Conference is usually held in July-August of each year.

DebConf22, which will be held in Kosovo, will welcome speakers and developers from around the world who contribute in various ways to Debian. Debian conference presentations and workshops will open the door for opportunities for technological development in Kosovo and local and international cooperation, and will promote Kosovo as a technology destination. To achieve this, FLOSSK is working to settle cooperation with the relevant authorities.

Since 2009, FLOSSK has organized the annual Software Freedom Kosova (SFK) conference that brings together around 350+ participants who collaborate and share common interests in open technology. In addition to this conference, FLOSSK has organized the State of the Map Southeast Europe conference that brought together all those who work with geographic information systems (GIS) and the free OpenStreetMap map.

FLOSSK is a non-governmental organization that supports, promotes and develops free open source software.

Sixth Request for the New Government

Our sixth request for the Government includes the adoption of a free Operating System distribution for schools, inclusion of Free Software alternatives in the curriculum and adoption of Free Software stacks in public administration.

Through this, instead of buying software licenses, the Government will invest in an operating system distribution suitable for educational settings.

Purchase of textbook rights and publication under an open license

Textbooks bought by the Kosovo Ministry of Education are of low quality and the procurement process does not lead to the best value for the money.

By making the textbooks available under a ‘’Free Culture’’ license, they can be shared and further improved on by other authors. Moreover, this action also allows conversion into different formats such as e-books, and lower costs in the long term.

Apple Maps & OpenStreetMap

Apple Maps ka ndryshuar emrat e qyteteve dhe fshatrave në Kosovë nga gjuha serbe në atë shqipe. Apple ka përdorur të dhënat nga OpenStreetMap për të shënjuar këto lokacione në gjuhën shqipe.

OpenStreetMap është projekt i hapur bashkëpunues ku secili individ mund të kontribuojë duke edituar apo duke shtuar lokacione të ndryshme. OSM ka rreth 7 milionë përdorues të regjistruar ndër të cilët janë edhe nxënësit e disa shkollave të mesme të Kosovës të cilët po i trajnojmë aktualisht për të pasuruar hartën e Kosovës. Kontributi juaj në OpenStreeMap do të shfaqet në shumë harta mobile, duke përfshirë edhe në Apple Maps.

Apple Maps has changed the names of cities and villages in Kosovo from Serbian to Albanian. Apple has used data from OpenStreetMap to mark these locations in Albanian.

OpenStreetMap is a collaborative project where anyone can contribute by editing or adding different locations.
OSM has about 7 million registered users, including students from several high schools in Kosovo whom we are currently training to enrich the map of Kosovo. Your contribution on OpenStreetMap will be visible on many mobile maps, including Apple Maps.

Release of government created data as open data

‘’Release of data created by public institutions as open data’’ is our next request for the Government.

Agencies that produce important data about the life of citizens charge for their data which hinders use by the public.

By making these data widely available as open data they will be accessible in bulk and through APIs. At least the following datasets will be liberated as a result of this policy: Kosovo Spatial Planning Document, Municipality Spatial Planning Documents, Orthophotos, all data on the Geoportal, Land Parcel Identification System, and Hydrometeorological Measurements.

Përmes kërkesës së tretë për Qeverinë, FLOSSK propozon vendosjen e softuerit dhe kodit burimor të financuar nga paratë publike nën një licencë copyleft (që promovon të drejtën e kopjimit).

As the third request for the Government, FLOSSK proposes a policy that puts software and underlying code funded by government money under a copyleft license available to the public.

What is the expected impact?

Software will be available for others to work and improve on in the future, and when that happens, it could come back to the Government to be integrated and further improved. This will allow for Government transparency related to decision-making parties on citizens’ rights and privileges.

Kosovo is lacking in the delivery of e-government services both to the citizens and to the public administration itself.

One of our requests for the Government is the procurement of Free/Libre and Open Source Software.

What are FLOSS’s benefits? This policy will lead to more competitive procurement procedures and will reduce costs as software projects will be adopted and be built on from existing open source code.

Një nga kërkesat e FLOSSK për Qeverinë e re është krijimi i një politike që përcakton dhe zgjeron materialin publik të krijuar nga institucionet nën domenin publik.

Kjo kërkesë ka të bëjë me përcaktimin e një politike që vë shumicën e veprave të administratës publike nën domenin publik. One of FLOSSK’s requests for the new Government is to establish a policy that defines and expands the public material created by institutions under the public domain.

Through this policy, more creative material created by the government will be available to the general public and this will spur economic activity, among other things.
